Swedish Christmas food – build a classic julbord

The traditional order

Many start with pickled herring and cold fish, continue with salmon and cold cuts, and then move to hot dishes. The order is optional but helps organise a large buffet.

Cold classics

Pickled herring, gravlax or smoked salmon, eggs, Christmas ham, beetroot salad, wort bread and cheese are common choices.

Hot favourites

Meatballs, small sausages, Jansson’s temptation, ribs and potatoes are frequent hot dishes. For a smaller celebration, three or four hot options are plenty.

Vegetarian and dietary needs

Roasted roots, kale, vegetarian balls, mushroom pâté and vegetable gratins fit naturally on the table. Label allergens when needed.

Dessert and sweets

Rice pudding, rice à la Malta, gingerbread, saffron buns, toffee and chocolate can be served later so the main buffet stays manageable.
